Gas Station Safety

The gasoline that you put into your vehicle is highly flammable. Any contact with a spark or flame can cause the gasoline to ignite, causing a large fire or explosion. However, many people either do not understand the dangers of fires at gas stations, or simply choose to take a risk with their own safety and that of everyone nearby.

The next time you fill up your tank, be sure to reduce the risk of fires by keeping the following safety precautions in mind:

  • Never smoke near a gas pump. The flame from a lighter or match could ignite gasoline or even strong gasoline fumes. A dropped lit cigarette can also be dangerous.
  • Always turn off your vehicle before fueling up. Your engine can cause sparks or intense heat which can ignite gasoline on the ground or nearby.
  • Do not create static electricity near the gas pump. If drivers re-enter their cars while gas is pumping, they may build up static electricity. Then when the driver grabs the gas pump handle, a spark can occur. This can ignite the gasoline pumped to your fuel tank, causing a fire or explosion. To reduce this risk, touch something metal to discharge or ground yourself before pumping gas.

By following these safety precautions, you can reduce the risk of fire at gas stations.
