Natural Gas Explosions

Natural gas is a type of gas that is mainly composed of methane. Methane is extracted from deposits of natural gas buried deep within the earth, is processed, and has a variety of uses, including generation of power, transportation, manufacturing, and domestic uses.

Methane Explosion Risks

Gas leaks cause a handful of explosions each year, some minor, and some devastating. A natural gas explosion can cause significant damage to a building and serious injuries to those inside. A long-term leak can cause a buildup of gas which can result in a large, deadly explosion, completely destroying the building and the nearby area. The most frequently-affected structures by methane gas explosions include:

  • Individual homes
  • Small businesses
  • Boats

Natural gas is usually colorless and odorless, so leaks can be hard to detect. For this reason, manufacturers usually add a small amount of foul-smelling substance to the gas so that people can detect a leak before an explosion occurs. Unfortunately, gases can sometimes collect in areas where people are not frequently present, such as in basements or other enclosed spaces. In addition, the odor added to the gas might fade over time due to other leaks or problems.
