Propane Leak Safety
Propane is a type of fuel widely used in home appliances. Propane becomes flammable when it is mixed with the oxygen in air, and can be easily ignited by many sources. For this reason, it is important to keep your appliances in top condition and know how to recognize and fix leaks.
Recognizing Leaks
Propane manufacturers intentionally add a foul-smelling chemical element to propane in order to alert home owners of leaks. If you smell a strong, foul smell and cannot locate the source, it may be a propane leaks. It is important to become familiar with the smell before installing any propane system. Your retailer can provide a demonstration of the smell.
If you smell a leak:
- Do not create any potential flames or sparks. Immediately extinguish any smoking materials or other flames. Do not turn on lights or appliances or operate your land line telephone or cell phone. These sources can all create sparks which can trigger a fire or an explosion.
- Inform others of the leak and immediately evacuate the area.
- If it is safe to do so, turn off the main gas supply valve on the propane gas tank by turning it clockwise.
- Once safely away from the leak, contact your propane retailer, your fire department, or dial 9-1-1.
- Do not return to the affected area until the team that responds to the leak informs you that it is safe to do so.
- Have a qualified propane retailer or service technician check your entire system for further leaks before attempting to use any propane appliances.
