Types of Burn Injuries

Burn victims may suffer from a range of injuries after a fire or explosion. Each of these injuries may require different treatment or healing time. There are three main types of burn injuries that range in severity from minor to debilitating and even life-threatening.

Degrees of Burns

There are three main types of burns: first degree, second degree, and third degree. First degree burns are the least serious type of burn, most commonly caused by sun exposure. They involve only the outer layer of the skin, do not form blisters, and can heal without treatment.

Second and third degree burns can be much more serious and may require hospitalization, surgery, and other treatments. Second degree burns:

  • Involve both inner and outer layers of the skin
  • Form blisters
  • Have a moist appearance

Second degree burns are highly painful to the victim, since the burn did not destroy pain sensors. However, often victims of third degree burns do not feel pain since these sensors have been destroyed. Third degree burns:

  • Affect all layers of the skin and internal organs and structures may also be affected.
  • Range in color from white and waxy to red or brown.
  • Cause a victim to no longer have any elasticity in the damaged skin.
  • Do not heal on their own and require extensive medical treatment.

After fires and explosions, victims may suffer from serious second and third degree burns, which each require a significant amount of treatment and healing time in the hospital.
