Wound Infections
Those who suffer very severe burns – such as those of the third or fourth degree – will require extensive medical care and therapy in order to recover safely and heal properly. Because these injuries are so invasive, they leave deep, gaping, and very serious wounds in their victims. If the lesions are not covered and kept out of contact of harmful bacteria, then the patient may suffer a dangerous wound infection.
Wound infections arise when bacteria is allowed to enter one’s burns, where they thrive and prevent healing of the injuries. People with wound infections will also suffer from a number of other painful and dangerous symptoms, including the following:
- Unusual changes in body temperature
- Quickened heart beat
- Abnormal discharge oozing from the wound
- Easy bleeding from the wound
- Redness, swelling, and soreness
If you receive treatment in a negligent medical facility that fails to adequately clean and treat your burns, then you may be at risk of developing a dangerous and potentially deadly wound infection.
Infection Risk Factors
People with any of the following medical conditions are at a higher risk of developing a wound infection while their burns are healing:
- Diabetes
- Cancer
- Liver, lung, or heart disease
- High blood pressure
- Cardiovascular disease
- Weakened immune system
You may also be at a higher risk of developing a wound infection if the injury is not cleaned properly. Dead skin and any other foreign objects that may be present at the injury site should be removed so that your burn wound can heal effectively. If they are left in your burns, you are more likely to suffer an infection.
