Leaking propane tank explodes in McDonald’s drive-thru

Posted on April 24th, 2012 No Comments

A man suffered second-degree burns Saturday afternoon in Coachella, California after a propane tank in the back of his pickup truck exploded. The man was with his two young sons in the drive-thru at McDonald’s when he heard a hissing sound.

The man tried to stop the leak by turning the valves, but static electricity ignited the fumes and caused an explosion. Firefighters believe high temperatures caused pressure to build up in the tanks, causing the leak.

The pickup truck’s tailgate was propelled into another car before the vehicle became engulfed in flames. Fortunately, the two sons were able to escape unharmed. No customers or employees were injured in the explosion.

The second victim of a deadly explosion that occurred in a Struther, Ohio waste treatment plant has died after more than a month in the hospital, struggling to overcome second and third-degree burns on 95 percent of his body.

The 57 year-old man was the second employee to die; the first man, 59, died about four weeks after the explosion of the same injuries. The two were maintenance workers at the plant. They were working on wiring when the explosion occurred.

Alpha Natural Resources, the new owner of the West Virginia coal mine where 29 workers were killed two years ago in an explosion, has announced that the mine will be sealed with concrete, a job estimated to be completed by the summer.

Last week, the family of a deceased miner filed a lawsuit against Massey Energy chief Don Blankenship and eight others it claims are responsible for one of the worst mining disasters in 40 years. According to the complaint, the family claims deliberate infliction of emotional distress and is seeking compensatory and punitive damages.

Only two former Massey Energy employees are facing charges so far. The former superintendent has plead guilty to defrauding the government and has been cooperating with prosecutors.

A massive home explosion in Washington County, Iowa that was felt by homeowners 15 miles away is still under investigation. Witnesses say they saw a flames reach as high as 25 feet as fire engulfed the home.

No one was injured in the explosion, and neighbors say the homeowner has been out of town. Homes as far as three to four miles away had their windows knocked out, motorists on the highway reported seeing the flames, and neighbors on the street say their houses shook.

Rain is believed to have prevented the flames from spreading to other homes and into a wooded area behind the now-ruined house. The cause of the explosion has not been determined.

Two men were injured late last week in a Portland, Oregon silicon factory after a chemical reactor exploded. The men were doing maintenance near the reactor, which mixes chemicals for manufacturing, when the explosion occurred.

The company’s spokesperson says the interaction between oxygen and trichlorosilane, a chemical compound of silicon, hydrogen and chlorine, created a volatile environment.  More than three dozen Portland firefighters responded.

The two men, both in their mid to late 50s, were taken to the hospital after they complained of respiratory problems. No one else was injured in the explosion.

A propane tank exploded in Yamika, Washington on Monday as employees at All-American Propane were lifting a 500-gallon propane take with a forklift. Workers said that they thought the tank was empty, but there was just enough liquid propane inside for it to leak out.

The leaking liquid propane was carried by the wind into the shop where the explosion occurred. Nearly a dozen fire departments at the scene were able to contain the fire to the shop.

One worker suffered from freezer-like burns when he came into contact with the cold liquid. His injuries are not considered life-threatening.

PG&E to pay $70 million to San Bruno for explosion

Posted on March 12th, 2012 No Comments

PG&E reached a $70 million settlement with the city of San Bruno, California after a pipeline explosion in September 2010 killed eight people and destroyed dozens of homes. The explosion is the country’s largest natural-gas disaster in history.

The settlement money will go towards a non-profit organization created to help the city determine how to use it best, as well as to help rebuild damaged infrastructure. The California Public Utility Commission accused PG&E, California’s largest utility, of violating state and federal safety laws in connection to the exposion.

PG&E says it will not try to recover the loss by increasing customer rates or through insurance.
