Explosion in Columbus Kills One, Injures Another

Posted on October 21st, 2009 No Comments

One worker was killed and another injured when an explosion ripped through the American Packaging Corporation in Columbus, WI.  The explosion occured at about 6 pm Sunday.

According to firefighters, the blast was caused when a worker was using a hand-held grinder on floor bolts.  The sparks thrown by the grinder ignited vapor in the air, causing an explosion so violent that it ripped out a sprinkler system.  The water escaping from the destroyed sprinklers helped put out the resulting fire, but not before one worker was killed and another injured.

The two workers are believed to be part of a maintenance crew, since they were the only people at the plant at the time of the explosion.
