One injured in Newark refinery fire

A two-alarm refinery explosion injured one employee at the Evergreen Oil plant in Newark.

Firefighters responded to the call at 5:30 a.m. and had the fire under control in 15 minutes. The explosion occurred when the heat exchanger malfunctioned.

The heat from the fire then caused the hydrochloric acid inside of the tank to rupture. The injured employee suffered from a broke arm and was transported to the hospital as a result. This is the refinery’s second major incident in the past 10 months.

Fire at Memphis refinery injures one

There was a refinery fire at Valero Energy Corp’s 195,000 barrel-a-day refinery  in Memphis, Tenn. that erupted at a sulfur extraction unit.

There was one injury as a result of the fire, which was extinguished quickly by the plant’s emergency response team. The fire broke out at 2:30 p.m. at  the hydrogenation unit, which extracts sulfur from the fuel streams. The injured worker was transported to the hospital, but details on his condition are unknown.

Seven hurt in refinery blast

Seven people were injured in a series of explosions at Suncor Energy’s refinery. This refinery plant produces gasoline, distillates, asphalt and other products.

Police received reports of the fires at around 4:45 p.m. and fire crews  were able to extinguish the fire that had broken out. Six people were sent to the hospital and also treated for shock. Another person sustained non-life threatening injuries in the accident. Officials do not know the cause of the blasts at this time.

Three killed, four injured in refinery explosion

An early morning explosion and fire at Tesoro Oil refinery in Washington state killed three and critically injured four others.

The explosion occured as workers at the refinery performed maintenance on the naptha unit, which processes chemicals in the refinery process. The blast from the explosion was felt up to five mile away. Injured workers were airlifted to the burn unit at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Three workers have still not been accounted for and three were killed.

Fire at Los Angeles area refinery

A fire occurred at Chevron Corp’s 279,000 barrel a day refinery in El Segundo, California.

The fire occurred in the electrical substation at the hydrocracking unit. Officials call the hydrocracker an isomax and is designed to crack heavy crude oil into jet fuel. This refinery provides 40 percent of the jet fuel for Los Angeles International Airport. The cause of the fire is still investigated.

Construction fire at New Mexico Refinery

A fire at Holly Corp. Refinery was reported around 12:30 p.m. in a new asphalt tank at a Navajo Refinery in Artesia, New Mexico.

The tank was under construction when the fire started. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. As of this point there are two confirmed injuries, one person missing and one possible fatality, though officials have not confirmed any fatalities yet. Operations at the refinery are still continuing as usual.

Explosion at a Louisiana Refinery

There was an explosion at Calumet Specialty Products Partners LP’s refinery in Shreveport, Louisiana on February 5.

The explosion occurred in a wet gas scrubber at the refinery. The explosion was reported to be felt from miles away. The refinery is the primary producer of hydrocarbon waxes and gels, but the plant also makes gasoline and diesel fuels. So far, no serious injuries have reported.

Explosion in Pennsylvania Refinery

An explosion in a Pennsylvania refinery on February 20  injured one employee.

The explosion occurred at United Refinery Co’s 70,000 barrel-per-day refinery. The explosion was caused by a backlash in the heater unit. The injured employee suffered burn injuries and was transported to the  hospital for treatment. There was minor damage to the plant. The injured employee has now been released from the hospital.

One injured in Montana refinery fire

In Great Falls, Montana, one worker was injured in a late night refinery fire.

A unit was being repaired at the refinery and this is where the fire broke out. Propane was leaking from one of the valves. The injured person suffered first and second degree burns in the fire and was transported to the hospital. The source of the ignition is being investigated.

Fire at Louisiana Refinery

There was a fire at an oil refinery plant in Norco, Louisiana causing the plant to be shut down.

The fire was caused by a leak in the distillate tank. It broke out around 11:30 p.m. and was extinguished by on-site emergency crews. One employee was injured during the fire. The cleaning up process is underway, but the plant has been able to continue its operations.
